CyberSecurity and Emergency Preparedness Institute
The CyberSecurity and Emergency Preparedness Institute addresses issues such as cybercrime, information assurance and emergency preparedness. One of only a handful of entities of its kind in the United States, the institute is helping UT Dallas expand its course offerings in information assurance, secure telecommunications networks, digital forensics, network security, data mining and multimedia, and emergency response systems. The institute is building on current research successes and highly acclaimed system implementations for ensuring information security and emergency preparedness. Institute expertise will be leveraged to achieve global recognition in areas vital to national and international security.
The institute includes three research centers: the CyberSecurity Research Center, the Emergency Preparedness Center and the Global Information Assurance Center.
Human Language Technology Research Institute
Human language technology incorporates a broad spectrum of disciplines working toward two closely related goals: 1) enabling computers to interact with humans using natural language capabilities and 2) enabling computers to serve as useful assistants to humans by providing services such as automatic text understanding and retrieval, information extraction and question answering, automatic translation, and speech recognition.
The institute includes six research centers: the Center for Basic Research in Natural Language Processing, the Center for Emerging Natural Language Applications, the Center for Machine Learning and Language Processing, the Center for Search Engines and Web Technologies, the Center for Text Mining and the InterVoice Center for Conversational Technologies.

Center for Basic Research in Natural Language Processing
The Center for Basic Research in Natural Language Processing focuses on research in lexico-semantics, syntactic and semantic processing of texts and dialogues, in-discourse processing and the development of cognitive models of language processing.
Center for Emerging Natural Language Applications
The Center for Emerging Natural Language Applications is committed to developing research techniques and studying the emerging areas of natural language applications, including textual question answering, multi-document summarization, text mining and open-domain information extraction.
Center for Machine Learning and Language Processing
The Center for Machine Learning and Language Processing is dedicated to developing statistical models of natural language and employing them to construct speech and natural language processing systems.
Center for Search Engines and Web Technologies
The Center for Search Engines and Web Technologies focuses on developing and applying new methods for locating information on the World Wide Web.
Center for Text Mining
The Center for Text Mining is involved in the analysis of general human text sources such as newspaper articles, Web pages and Usenet articles. The goal is to build better machine knowledge bases from human text.

The CyberSecurity Research Center is dedicated to conducting focused research and education that help prevent, detect and solve cybercrimes.
Embedded Software Center
The Embedded Software Center is an industrial/academic collaborative center for advanced research to dramatically increase the productivity and quality of complex embedded applications.
Emergency Preparedness Center
The Emergency Preparedness Center is dedicated to enabling a rapid response to incidents involving hazardous materials by developing techniques and methodologies that provide timely, accurate information to first responders.
Global Information Assurance Center
The Global Information Assurance Center is committed to conducting focused research into techniques and methodologies for ensuring the physical security of information, a much-overlooked component of information security.
InterVoice Center for Conversational Technologies
Made possible by a generous gift from InterVoice Inc., the InterVoice Center focuses on the integration of syntactic and semantic knowledge with current automatic speech recognition techniques.
